The Secrets of Arthas and the Best Arthas Talents

The Secrets of Arthas and the Best Arthas Talents

Written by Old Guardian - 27th March 2025

Arthas is a powerful time-limited Alliance/Undead Leader mini that was added to Warcraft Rumble on March 26, 2025. In this article, I will reveal all of its secrets and the details on how Arthas' abilities and talents really work, as well as what are the best talents to choose for Arthas.

Note that, as a time-limited mini, you may not always be able to acquire Arthas. He is easily available for free during his event from 26 March until 9 April, and players who collect him are able to use him at all times, but future availability is unknown.

Arthas Details

  • Alliance/Undead
  • 4 gold
  • Melee, One-Target, Frost, Armored, Remorseless Winter, Army of the Dead, Lichborne
  • 1100 Health
  • 2 Movement speed (Medium)

Arthas does not have a lot of Health, but he more than makes up for it with his wide array of abilities.

Arthas has one melee attack:

  • 185 physical damage
  • 2.5 second attack speed
  • Melee range

He has a powerful Frost aura called Remorseless Winter:

  • Applies Frost to nearby enemies
  • Frost reduces both their attack and movement speed by 50%
  • 6.5 radius from Arthas
  • Note that this range means that most ranged minis will be shooting at Arthas from outside the Frost aura, if Arthas is fighting against a tank

Army of the Dead:

  • Periodically summons a Frosty Footman
  • Maximum of 2 Footmen at a time, per Arthas
  • Both are summoned immediately when you deploy Arthas
  • 10-second cooldown for each Footman, starts when summoned, so if they die after 10 seconds or more, Arthas immediately summons another
  • Arthas is a Footman-summoning machine, and if you have a cycle deck where you can play Arthas often, you will get a huge Footman army

Soulshatter:

  • While deployed, Frosted enemies die instantly when taking any damage below 20% health
  • Does not apply to buildings, bosses, and mini-bosses
  • Global while Arthas is alive
  • Target needs to be hit while already under 20% health – mostly effective against big tanks because small minis often die to a hit while under 20% health anyway

Lichborne:

  • Nearby allied Alliance Minis summon stationary Skeleton Mages on death
  • Allied, so also works for your partners' minis in co-op, but only close to Arthas
  • 12 radius from Arthas

Arthas has several abilities with limited range, so he wants to be at the center of action. Arthas cannot tank very well himself, but his Footmen can tank for him. When deploying Arthas, pay attention to getting his Footmen to go in front of him (no small distraction on one side pulling them away, and then start walking behind Arthas).

Arthas Talents

Like all minis, Arthas has three available talents. The in-game descriptions don't tell you everything about them, so let's examine each in detail.

Death Grip

Periodically pull Ranged enemies into melee range, stunning them for 2 seconds. Death Grip has an 8-second cooldown and a range between 3 and 9: minis closer than 3 are not pulled, and a maximum range of 9 means that only Splashing Pumpkins Plague Farmer, Queen's Reach Sylvanas, and Meat Wagon can shoot at Arthas while being too far for Death Grip.

I did not expect much from Death Grip, but because Arthas' Frost aura has a fairly small radius, Death Grip does a good job at making sure ranged attackers also get Frosted.

Necrotic Plague

Soulshatter also applies to Poisoned enemies. This is a major improvement because poison ticks every 0.5 seconds, so minis end up dead right at the 20% threshold. It still requires Arthas to be alive to take effect, and you need to run some poison minis in your army as well. It still does not affect even mini-bosses.

Purgatory

On death, become invulnerable for 5 seconds. If Arthas’ first target after resurrection dies within those 5 seconds, return to life with 25% health.

Resurrection can be powerful, especially if you have a healer with you, but even without a healer, Arthas can survive surprisingly well thanks to the Footmen he summons. As a downside, Purgatory can only proc once per Arthas: there is not even a cooldown, just a hard cap of one resurrection. Still, Purgatory has its upsides, as it is a period of guaranteed life either way.

The Best Arthas Talents

All of Arthas' talents have potential.

My first pick is Death Grip because it is the most flexible one. It also directly mitigates one of Arthas' weaknesses against ranged minis outside of his Frost aura.

The second pick is more difficult, but Purgatory edges ahead of Necrotic Plague. An unconditional period of extra life is always valuable.

This leaves Necrotic Plague last. If you run Arthas with a poison comp, Necrotic Plague is fine, but the other two talents are much more flexible.
