Boss Strategy

Heroic Elder Torntusk map

This guide focuses on the Heroic Elder Torntusk encounter in Hinterlands but also works for the normal version.

Minis in Elder Torntusk’’s army

  • Bat Rider - Flaming Pitch
  • Chain Lightning - Brilliant Flash
  • Darkspear Troll - Serpent Sting
  • Earth Elemental - Obsidian Shard
  • Ogre Mage - Frostfire Bolt
  • Prowler - Predatory Instincts
  • Raptors - Fast Food

Other minis and map mechanics

The main mechanic in the Elder Torntusk battle is Dreamtracker, the dragon that circles clockwise around the middle area of the map. Dreamtracker leaves behind dream dust. When your minis touch dream dust, they fall asleep for 4 seconds. In Heroic, they switch sides and join Elder Torntusk’s army when they wake up.

Torntusk summons special Bog Beasts from the portal in the middle of the map. They resemble the regular Bog Beast, but have slightly more Health and deal more damage. The first one spawns at 3:27 and then another one arrives every 35 seconds.

Torntusk’s only attack is a powerful 90-degree melee cleave attack.

General strategy

Going through Dream Dust is hard work, so you’re better off defending close to your base and using Unbound minis to kill Elder Torntusk.

Play Whelp Eggs close to Elder Torntusk, and as his attack animation is ongoing, drop an Earth Elemental on the opposite side, closer to Elder Torntusk, so that when the Eggs pop, Earth Elemental is the closest mini and will become Torntusk’s next target.

Ogre Mage is a potential issue, so try to play your combo when the boss has recently used an Ogre Mage. You will likely need two or three rounds of Eggs and Elemental to take the boss down, depending on your levels.

Use your other minis to defend. Defend close to your base to avoid them from entering dream dust. Turn the direction switch to the left so that your minis will move clockwise, the same direction as Dreamtracker. This will keep them out of dream dust for a while longer.
