Boss Strategy
This guide focuses on the Heroic Jaina Proudmoore encounter in Dustwallow Marsh but also works for the normal version.
Minis in Jaina’s army
- Blizzard - Cold Snap
- Defias Bandits - Last Resort
- Footmen - Shield Bash
- Gryphon Rider - Mighty Throw
- Huntress - Elven Might
- Mountaineer - Frenzied Spirit
- S.A.F.E. Pilot - Muttonizer
Other minis and map mechanics
Jaina has four (two in normal) Blizzard runes protecting the lanes towards her. Each of the runes casts Blizzard when a mini of yours enters them, and then dissipates. In Heroic, these Blizzards are cast with the Brittle Ice talent. The runes respawn 30 seconds after they have been triggered, 25 seconds after the Blizzard ends.
Jaina can deploy minis at her location, and also from the Towers to the left and right.
General strategy
The Blizzard runes are rendered much less important because Jaina is made of paper. The main strategy to beat Jaina is to deploy Whelp Eggs on one side of her and as her attack animation is ongoing, deploy a Quilboar to the other side of her, slightly closer than the Eggs. Eggs are popped by Jaina’s attack, and because Quilboar is now the closest enemy, Jaina turns around to face it. Repeat a couple of times and you’re done.
There is some nuance to the strategy.
First, you usually want to deploy the Eggs after Jaina has just played something expensive: Footmen, Huntress, or Mountaineer. This ensures that she does not have gold to respond to the Eggs.
Second, you do like some income, if at all possible. The chest on the left can be claimed by ranged minis without venturing into the Blizzard, and the gold vein on the right can be mined by first sending some mini there to proc the Blizzard and then sending a Kobold to mine while the Blizzard rune is in cooldown.
You need to use some minis to defend your base, at least unless you outlevel the encounter. With a steady defense, you will have plenty of time to pull off the necessary Whelp Egg attacks on Jaina.
