Important talents

Enchanted Vials is important for Bat Rider to extend the area of the flame pool and hit the ranged minis in the back line.

Everything else is optional.

Strategy

  • Send a Gargoyle towards the right Tower along the right edge
  • Send a Bat Rider to support the Gargoyle, but play it on the left edge of the deployment zone to keep some distance from the Gargoyle
  • Defend against Shy-Rotam’s minis as needed
  • Avoid using ground minis at and above the Towers
  • Send your Miner from the right along the left edge of the deployment zone: it will take a left turn towards the gold veins even if the direction arrow points at the Tower

Boss Strategy

Heroic Shy-Rotam map

This guide focuses on the Heroic Shy-Rotam encounter in Winterspring, but also works for the normal version.

Minis in Shy-Rotam’s army

  • Angry Chickens - Furious Fowl
  • Blizzard - Brittle Ice
  • Harpies - Talon Dive
  • Mountaineer - Mend Pets
  • Murloc Tidehunters - Safety Bubble
  • Ogre Mage - Frostfire Bolt
  • Prowler - Pack Leader

Other minis and map mechanics

Shy-Rotam and Sian-Rotam are the twin bosses in the fight, and they are fully identical. They will charge at ground minis around the Towers and above. This charge is actually scarier than their regular attack, as it deals 450 Physical damage on a small area around the target.

Shy-Rotam and Sian-Rotam cannot attack flying units at all, and will not charge at flying units either.

There are three stationary Darkspear Trolls guarding Shy-Rotam and Sian-Rotam and providing them with some cover against flying units. The Trolls respawn after a while if killed.

General strategy

Before the Whelp Egg nerf, the main strategy to beat Shy-Rotam was to drop Whelp Eggs next to it: Flame Burst would kill the Troll that gives Shy-Rotam anti-air cover, and the Whelps would be free to kill the boss. This still works if you heavily overlevel the encounter, but it is no longer a viable way to complete the encounter underleveled or at even levels.

My current main recommendation is to use Flying minis: Gargoyle is good at taking Towers and can also survive hits from a Troll for a while when attacking the boss. Complement that with a Bat Rider, and you have a flame pool that kills the Troll and allows you unhindered access to the boss.

Avoid clumping up your flying minis because of Ogre Mages and Blizzard. For example, if you send a Gargoyle up the far right side, send your dps from the left edge of that right deployment zone so that they keep a bit of a distance to the Gargoyle and will not get wiped out by an Ogre Mage shooting at the Gargoyle.

Alternatively, you can push with ground minis if you have a big armored tank to lead the way, such as Abomination with Earth Shield from Frostwolf Shaman. You will get charged at a lot, but if your tank is sturdy enough, it can take those hits. If you use ground minis, first see where the boss sends its minis and then send your army to meet them: you will not have enough gold to defend one direction and push the other.

A note on mining: You can send your troops to the right Tower with the direction switch and still have your Miner go to the middle. If you position your Miner at the left edge of the right deployment zone, it will notice the gold vein on its way up and take a left turn to the gold area.
