Strategy

  • Steal the Molten Giants, starting from the right-most one that is attacking towards your base
  • Take the second from the right that is guarding a Tower next, followed by the one guarding the bridge and access to gold veins. The left-most Giant is optional.
  • Attack Volchan from the right tower and through the right lane.
  • You may need to let your base tank some of the hits from the Ogre Mage at the start: wait for it to commit and then deploy your minis to take it down.

Boss Strategy

Heroic Volchan map

This guide focuses on the Heroic Volchan encounter in Blackrock Mountain, but also works for the normal version.

Minis in Volchan’s army

  • Defias Bandits - Last Resort
  • Drake - Engulfing Flames
  • Fire Elemental - Immolation Aura
  • Goblin Sappers - Crude Gunpowder
  • Gryphon Rider - Odyn’s Fury
  • Living Bomb - Chain Reaction
  • Mountaineer - Frenzied Spirit

Volchan is one of the bosses with Living Bomb, so remember to avoid using large groups.

Other minis and map mechanics

At the start of the fight, Volchan has four Molten Giants (Blood of the Mountain) on the board. However, only the right-most one attacks your base, the others will only stand guard and fight if approached. Each of the Molten Giants explodes and splits into two smaller Molten Giants when killed. The smaller Molten Giants also explode when killed.

Volchan also has an Ogre Mage (Avarice) and a Dark Iron Miner (Dwarven Ambition) on the map at the start of the fight. They respawn on a 1-minute timer, so they reappear at 2:30, 1:30, and 0:30.

Volchan (5200 Health) explodes and splits into two smaller Volchans (1300 Health each) when killed, each of which further explodes and splits into two even smaller Volchans (350 Health each) when killed.

General strategy

Volchan has the most annoying Molten Giants ever with the combination of exploding and splitting, so you have a huge incentive to steal them for yourself. Start with the right-most one that is already coming at you, and proceed towards the left. You really want the next one that is guarding a Tower, and you almost always want the one on the bridge who guards access to gold veins. The left-most one is optional, as it is far away from the boss.

Attack Volchan from the right tower, and also through the right lane and pick up the chests on the way.

In order to steal all those Giants, you need a fairly low-cost deck that allows you to cycle to more Banshees effectively while countering Volchan’s minis as well as possible.

Before you gain access to the bridge, you may need to let your base tank some hits from the Ogre Mage: wait until it commits to shooting at your base, and then send minis to fight against it.
