In Assassin’s Creed Shadows, along with the Legendary Chests found in Kofuns and Castles, there are 35 Hidden Chests scattered across the map, each containing a legendary item.
These Hidden Chests are easy to miss, unless you’re specifically looking for them. If you’re not a hardcore AC Shadows player, you might not want to trek across the entire map to find them; and with scaling level systems across each region, you’ll need to level up significantly before accessing all of the chests and claiming your rewards.
This guide is your ultimate resource for the Hidden Chests in Assassin’s Creed Shadows. We’ve compiled all 35 locations of the Hidden Chests and provided details on what each chest contains. Read on to discover all the locations, or use the links below to skip directly to the specific regions you're interested in!

Chests by Region:
Izumi Settsu
- Region Level: Starting Region
- Chests: 4
- Legendary Rewards: 1x Katana, 1x Tanto, 2x Trinkets
After travelling from Iga in the opening of AC Shadows, you’ll find yourself primarily in Izumi Settsu as you build Naoe’s character level. This makes it the perfect region to start collecting Hidden Chests, with four in total (all containing Legendary items for Naoe).
1. Igan Sunset Tanto - Katano Foothills (Naoe)
Map Location: Tozuku’s Lair in Katano Foothills, North-East of Katano Castle – Izumi Settsu
Potential Combat: 3 foes
Chest Location: Inside the largest building
Legendary Reward: Igan Sunset Tanto with engraving (Slow down time on Escape Strike)
Tozuku’s Lair is located in Katano Foothills, North-East of Katano Castle. You’ll encounter bandits lingering around a small settlement, but they won’t be difficult to take down. Once you’ve cleared the area, you can find the chest in the largest building on the settlement, simply slide the door open and the chest is to the left, underneath the window.
2. Otakemaru's Battlecry Trinket - Muggy Lands (Naoe)
Map Location: Koriyama Camp in Muggy Lands, East of The Warfields – Izumi Settsu
Potential Combat: 10+ foes (1 Elite)
Chest Location: In a room in the pit, at the centre of the Camp
Legendary Reward: Otakemaru’s Battlecry Trinket with engraving (+1% Health per Mastery Point in Shinobi)
Koriyama Camp is located in Muggy Lands, near the western border of Izumi Settsu. Within the camp, you’ll find several guards patrolling a central pit. You’ll need to eliminate a few of these guards to get into the pit, where a room containing the chest awaits.
3. Bloodshade Katana - Castle Boat (Naoe)
Map Location: Castle Boat on West coast of Osaka, South of Amagasaki – Izumi Settsu
Potential Combat: 5+ foes
Chest Location: In a room on the second floor, at the back of the boat
Legendary Reward: Bloodshade Katana with engraving (Affliction Buildup is not lost over time)
On the West coast of Osaka, you’ll see a large ‘Castle Boat’. You can either swim to it or commandeer a boat and sail over. Climb up the back of the boat, where several guards are patrolling. You can either eliminate them all or pick off the few that are closest.
The chest is located on the second floor, in a room with one guard inside. Once you’ve dispatched the guards below, climb to the platform by the window and deal with the guard in the chest room. This will leave you free to open the chest.
4. Oni’s Fury Trinket - Teratsutsuki Den (Naoe)
Map Location: Teratsutsuki Den in Kawachi Heights, East of Izumi Coast – Izumi Settsu
Potential Combat: 3 foes
Chest Location: In the broken hut
Legendary Reward: Oni’s Fury Trinket with engraving (+15% damage per non-Legendary Gear Equipped)
At Teratsutsuki Den in Kawachi Heights, you’ll find three bandits surrounding a crumbling hut. Eliminate all three foes, and you’ll be free to open the chest, which is located inside the hut.
Yamashiro
- Region Level: 10+
- Chests: 5
- Legendary Rewards: 1x Katana, 1x Teppo, 1x Kanabo, 1x Kusarigama, 1x Trinket
Yamashiro is the next region in AC Shadows that you can access, based on your level progression. There are five Hidden Chests in Yamashiro, two containing Legendary items for Naoe and three for Yasuke.
1. Deathbloom Kusarigama - Little Leaf Glade (Naoe)
Map Location: Sarumaru Shrine in Little Leaf Glade, North-West of Hijiyama – Yamashiro
Potential Combat: No combat
Chest Location: On the rock face behind the largest Shrine building
Legendary Reward: Deathbloom Kusarigama with engraving (Increase Impact on Alternate Attacks)
At the Sarumaru Shrine in Little Leaf Glade, follow the path up (or down if you’ve approached from the top of the mountain) until you reach a wooden bridge leading to a platform behind the largest Shrine building. Cross the bridge, then climb the rock next to the platform. The chest is at the top of the rock, directly behind the building.
2. Tatsu’s Triumph Trinket - Ogura Pond (Naoe)
Map Location: Ogura Peak at Ogura Pond, East of Yamazaki – Yamashiro
Potential Combat: No combat
Chest Location: On top of rocks at the end of the river, leading on from the wooden bridge
Legendary Reward: Tatsu’s Triumph Trinket with engraving (+2% tool damage per Mastery Point in Tools)
Travelling towards Ogura Peak, you’ll need to use multiple climbing techniques, such as shimmying up tree trunks, to climb the hilly terrain around Ogura Pond. Following the path, you’ll eventually come to a wooden bridge. Look up the river to the left of the bridge, and you’ll spot the chest nestled in a rocky area at the end of the river.
3. Turquoise Zephyr Long Katana - Eagle’s Nest (Yasuke)
Map Location: Cliffs of Thought in East Eagle’s Nest, West of Shoryuji – Yamashiro
Potential Combat: No combat
Chest Location: Underneath broken bridge, next to a broken cart
Legendary Reward: Turquoise Zephyr Long Katana with engraving (Successful parries push nearby enemies back)
While exploring the area, you’ll come across a broken bridge over a ravine. Look below the bridge, and you’ll spot a broken cart with the chest resting on top, at the bottom of the ravine.
4. Cascading Fear Teppo - Genbu Highlands (Yasuke)
Map Location: Namikiri Fudoson Shrine in the Genbu Highlands, North-West of Kyoto – Yamashiro
Potential Combat: No combat
Chest Location: At the top of a rock face, directly behind a large statue
Legendary Reward: Cascading Fear Teppo with engraving (Kill enemies below 25% Health on Headshots)
At Namikiri Fudoson Shrine, you’ll notice a large statue with a bronze backing. The chest is located directly behind this statue, at the top of the rock face. When facing the statue, head to the left side and you’ll see a climbable area of the rock face. Climb the rock face and you’ll reach the chest at the top.
5. Rage of Red Mist Kanabo - Genbu Highlands (Yasuke)
Map Location: Grave of Buried Hopes in the Genbu Highlands, North of Kyoto – Yamashiro
Potential Combat: No combat
Chest Location: At the end of a path, heading South-East from the Grave of Buried Hopes
Legendary Reward: Rage of Red Mist Kanabo with engraving (+100% of an Adrenaline Chunk after Armor Break)
At the Grave of Buried Hopes, high up in the Genbu Highlands of northern Yamashiro, follow the path that leads south-east from the solitary building. The chest is hidden among the foliage, so you’ll only spot it near the end of the track.
Omi
- Region Level: 18
- Chests: 4
- Legendary Rewards: 1x Kanabo, 1x Kusarigama, 1x Teppo, 1x Trinket
Omi is the third region you’ll meet the level requirement for in Assassin’s Creed Shadows. There are four chests in Omi: two containing Legendary items for Naoe and two for Yasuke, all scattered around the large body of water in the centre of the region.
1. Venom Pillar Kanabo - Mount Hiei (Yasuke)
Map Location: Kajimiya Cemetery on Mount Hiei, South-West of Sakamoto – Omi
Potential Combat: No combat
Chest Location: Hidden behind a large rock, visible from the top of the first wide set of steps
Legendary Reward: Venom Pillar Kanabo with engraving (Instantly charge Posture attacks by alternating attack types)
At Kajimiya Cemetery on Mount Hiei, you’ll find a hidden chest behind a large rock, making it difficult to spot unless you’re actively searching for it. At the top of the first set of steps, look to the right to see the rock, you can also use Observe to see the gold marker if you’re struggling.
2. Graceful Crane Trinket - The Shimmering Fields (Naoe)
Map Location: Mikami Viewpoint in The Shimmering Fields, South-West of Azuchi – Omi
Potential Combat: No combat
Chest Location: At the top of a waterfall, in a shallow pit by the base of the viewpoint tree
Legendary Reward: Graceful Crane Trinket with engraving (150% to Stats with no weapon equipped)
In The Shimmering Fields, you’ll need to climb a waterfall to reach the Mikami Viewpoint. Start by climbing the right-hand side of the waterfall, using the designated climbing points. Further up, jump over to the left-hand side using the tree branch, before finishing the climb. At the top, the chest is located in a pit by the base of the viewpoint tree.
3. Featherstorm Kusarigama - Ibu Highlands (Naoe)
Map Location: Kashiwabara Fortress in Ibu Highlands, East of Nagahama – Omi
Potential Combat: 5+ foes (+1 Samurai Daisho)
Chest Location: In the northern half of the fortress, bottom-right corner, in a shallow hole
Legendary Reward: Featherstorm Kusarigama with engraving (Instantly charge Posture attacks when hitting multiple enemies)
Within Kashiwabara Fortress in Ibu Highlands, you’ll find the chest in the bottom-right corner of the Northern half of the fortress. While the fortress is patrolled by outlaws, they don’t dwell in the northern area, so combat depends on how you choose to enter the fortress.
4. Patient Harbinger Teppo - Ado River Valley (Yasuke)
Map Location: Kamikoga’s Ippon Sugi in Ado River Valley, North-West of Omizo – Omi
Potential Combat: No combat
Chest Location: At the base of a dead tree by the river side, tucked into a cluster of rocks
Legendary Reward: Patient Harbinger Teppo with engraving (Chamber two bullets instead of one)
At Kamikoga’s Ippon Sugi in Ado River Valley, you’ll notice a solitary dead tree on a rock by the riverside. Examine the sides of the rock, and you’ll find a cluster of rocks with the chest nestled in the middle.
Iga
- Region Level: 23
- Chests: 2
- Legendary Rewards: 1x Katana, 1x Trinket
Despite being the first region you experience in Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Iga has a recommended level of 23 before you venture back. Making it the fourth region where you’ll meet the required level and being smaller than Harima, it’s easier to collect all the chests here first.
1. Masked Death Katana - Shimagahara Valley (Naoe)
Map Location: Shimagahara Valley in Otogi Pass, North-West of Ichinomiya – Iga

Chest Location: In an empty camp in Shimagahara Valley, East of the Otogi Pass sign

2. Fluttering Moth Trinket - Nabari Wilds (Naoe)
Map Location: Four Devils Lair in Nabari Wilds, North-East of Uda Matsuyama – Iga

Chest Location: At the end of the Four Devils Lair
Legendary Reward: Fluttering Moth Trinket with engraving (Kusarigama Specialization)
Harima
- Region Level: 23
- Chests: 3
- Legendary Rewards: 1x Kusarigama, 1x Amulet, 1x Helmet
Harima also has a recommended level of 23, but with one additional chest to collect compared to Iga. After progressing through more of Assassin’s Creed Shadows’ main storyline and side quests, you’ll soon be able to enter Harima and find the three chests.

2. Samurai Daimyo Helmet of Legend - Mount Kasagata (Yasuke)

3. Headhunter Amulet - Mount Kasagata (Yasuke)

Yamato is the next step up from Iga and Harima, with a recommended level of 29. This region contains three Hidden Chests, so it’ll be the next stop before tackling the more chest-dense Wakasa.

Wakasa
- Region Level: 29

Wakasa has the most Hidden Chests of any region in AC Shadows, with a total of six. With a recommended level of 29, it’ll be the seventh region on your list to explore for the elusive Hidden Chests.

Map Location: Grave of the Three Emperors in Shattered Coast area, West of Onyu Pass – Wakasa

Map Location: Yaobikuni Cave in Onyu Pass area, South of Obama – Wakasa

5. Claws of the Tide Long Katana - Mount Uchinakao (Yasuke)
Map Location: Uchinakao Burrows in Mount Uchinakao area, West of Genbao Fortress – Wakasa

6. Fujin’s Tempest Amulet - Shattered Coast (Yasuke)
Map Location: Koromodako Cave in Shattered Coast, South-West of Obama – Wakasa

Chest Location: Inside Koromodako Cave (after completing the Biwa Master Quest)
Legendary Reward: Fujin’s Tempest Amulet with engraving (+10% damage per alerted province)
Unlocked after completing the Biwa Master Quest. To begin, speak to the Biwa master at Saifukuji Temple to receive the quest. Once you’ve discovered all five Pirate Alliance locations and completed the quest, head to Koromodako Cave to find the chest.
Kii
- Region Level: 35
- Chests: 4
- Legendary Rewards: 1x Headgear, 1x Light Armor, 1x Trinket, 1x Long Katana
Kii is one of the two regions with the highest recommended level in Assassin’s Creed Shadows, set at level 35. Once you’ve leveled up enough to explore this area, there are four Hidden Chests for you to collect.
1. Noh Masterstroke Mask - Kinokawa Valley (Naoe)
Map Location: Mount Koya in Kinokawa Valley area, West of Koyasan – Kii

Chest Location: Behind a bamboo wall, under the Mount Koya Viewpoint
Legendary Reward: Noh Masterstroke Mask with engraving (+20% of an Adrenaline Chunk on Affliction Buildup)
This Chest is located at the peak of Mount Koya, hidden behind a bamboo wall that can be smashed. It’s very close to the Mount Koya Viewpoint, you can drop down to the ledge it’s on, from there.
2. Noh Masterstroke Costume - Sazae Oni Shores (Naoe)
Map Location: Limori Cave near Sazae Oni Shores, East of Saika – Kii
Potential Combat: TBC
Chest Location: Inside Limori Cave
Legendary Reward: Noh Masterstroke Costume with engraving (Spread Affliction Buildup on afflicted enemy kill)
3. Oni’s Bite Trinket - Nakahechi Route (Naoe)
Map Location: Torike Cave in Nakahechi Route area, South-East of Sazae Oni Shores – Kii

Tamba

Tamba is one of the final regions you’ll explore in Assassin’s Creed Shadows, with a recommended level of 35. This region has four Hidden Chests for you to find.
1. Extravagant Kabukimono Headgear - The Silver Lands (Yasuke)
Map Location: Narutaki Falls in The Silver Lands area, West of Kameyama – Tamba
