Kingdom Come: Deliverance II is the sequel to Kingdom Come: Deliverance. As its successor, its story starts just a few days after the first one, and you get straight into the action. So you might want to do a few things before playing, during the intro and just after to have the best start possible.
First of all, outside of the game, you might want to check the story of the first game. If you haven’t played it, you don’t need to know much about the gameplay because a lot of tutorials are still there but checking the game’s story is highly recommended. The game will provide a quick dialogue telling what happened in the past, but won’t go into too much detail.
If you already played the game, a quick refresh is always a good idea. Once you are in, the game will start with the prologue, and Henry, your character, will start to discuss the past with his friends and allies. This first part of the game is designed to remind you of the actions you took in the first game and make sure other people will act accordingly. If you’ve never played Kingdom Come: Deliverance, don’t worry: you are free to mold Henry as you want.
Choosing one stat over another won’t drastically change Henry and will not start a snowball effect making your build doomed from the start. All stats are useful and will come in handy, so it’s no big deal. Don’t forget that KCD is a role playing game and shaping your character personality and reputation is as important as making a “viable” build.
Once you are up and running, the prologue goes on and - little spoiler here - you end up stranded, and start with basically nothing. A little sword and that’s all. Now, from there, what can you do ?
Before continuing with the main quest, there are a few things we should do to make sure your experience playing the game is better.
- If you want, you can start by stealing a few things from the alchemist in Troskowitz, mainly two books, a recipe and a few things from a chest. Don’t overstay your welcome, always close the doors and make sure you are stealthy all the way! After, sit on a bench in the town and fully read the two books if you choose to steal them.
- Go check on the Tailor in the Troskowitz, sell a few things (and haggle for a better price) and buy some Tailor’s kit. Those are more efficient for armor repair than paying a merchant for repairs.
- Sharpen your sword because we will need to fight! Don’t make it burn and try to make clean white sparks so it’s in the best possible shape.
- After that, follow the northwest path out of the city until you come to a fork with a few trees on the right. In this spot (named Target on a tree), you will find arrows, a free bow, and a sac with nice resources in it. Up in the tree with the target, there is a nest. You want to throw rocks at the nest and once it falls down, loot it.
- Now, we would recommend completing the Combat Training Quest. It will ask you to go quite far which isn’t great, but we will do one thing on the way there and then complete it. Completing it will improve your sword skills and will unlock a key combat feature: Master Striking. To start the quest, talk to the woman with the red dress and white cap walking through Troskowitz.
- Once you have the quest, head right to Semine. Walk down the main road out of Troskowitz south west and follow it in the same direction until you find the city. There, find the castle, the stables and look for the grey horse named Peebles. It’s your horse from the first game! You can speak with the stable master to get it back for free. If you want, you can save before the negotiations just to be sure to get the horse for free, if you fail the negotiation check, just reload the game.
- We can go do the Combat training quest in the nomad camp even further down the Semine route. Do the 2 parts of the quest, and you are good to go.
- Now we need gear: If you go to the town of Zhelejov, take the road out south and go west, you will be able to find in the forest southwest of Zhelejov a little bandit camp. Fight the dog, knock down the bandit through stealth and kill him. Loot him for the armor, then the whole camp and sell what you can’t wear.
- The last part would be to find your dog, Mutt. From the Nomad camp, you will have to go south and follow the path southwest deeper in the forest. Once you are at the end of the path, Mutt will be there. An action sequence will begin (no spoilers). Don’t forget to loot your surroundings!
You should be good to go and have armor, a horse and a dog to fight with you. Don’t hesitate to explore freely, this guide is a rough idea about where to find what you need, but KCD 2 is about freedom and exploration, you can (and most likely, will) deviate from the path.
During all this, kill wild animals to produce food so you don’t die from starvation. Now, you can go on your own and decide what to do. As the appeal of Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 relies a lot on your choices in the Main storyline, we will not spoil anything and let you discover the game.
FAQ
Are there bad choices in Kingdom Come: Deliverance?
Regarding story: not really. You are making your own Henry, and it’s for you to decide. Those choices will impact the world around you, but nothing is “bad” per say. It all depends on what your goals are, and that is subjective. Running into a bandit camp might be a bad choice for a stealth character, but not for a knight.
Why should I get the dog early on?
Mutt, your dog companion, will help you a lot in combat by distracting enemies, biting ankles, etc. It’s a nice gameplay upgrade (and who doesn’t want a nice doggie?).
What’s the best stat to get at the start of the game?
Again, this really depends on your goals. I would stay strength or vitality are safe bets, increasing your fighting power while still giving you some quality of life upgrades. But if you want, you can just try to talk your way out of everything and always increase your speech!
