Boss Strategy

Heroic Tirion map

This guide focuses on the Heroic Tirion Fordring encounter in Plaguelands, but also works for the normal version.

Minis in Tirion Fordring’s army

  • Angry Chickens - Walking Crate
  • Bat Rider - Enchanted Vials
  • Footmen - Last Stand
  • Huntress - Darnassian Steel
  • Mountaineer - Frenzied Spirit
  • Pyromancer - Pyroblast
  • S.A.F.E. Pilot - Muttonizer

Other minis and map mechanics

Tirion cleaves both ground and flying units and has a healing ability that can reach the entire map. Tirion has 0 gold at the start of the fight, so it will take a while before he can deploy anything.

At the start of the encounter, Tirion has two groups of two Footmen and a Frostwolf Shaman that will start moving towards your base. New ones will spawn little by little: two Footmen at 3:00, another two Footmen at 2:50, and two Frostwolf Shaman at 2:40. Then the new groups will start moving towards your base, and the spawns continue: two Footmen at 2:00, another two Footmen at 1:50, and two Frostwolf Shaman at 1:40, and so on.

Every time you cast a spell, it will spawn two Skeletons and a Skeletal Mage in addition to its other effects.

General strategy

The fastest way to defeat Tirion is to use Unbound minis. Tirion has a strong push coming at you, but that push is very, very slow. You have ample time to beat Tirion before it ever reaches your base.

Ideally, you start with Whelp Eggs close to Tirion, and as Tirion starts to swing at them, you deploy an Earth Elemental on the opposite side, a little closer to Tirion than the Eggs are. This should result in Tirion popping all the Eggs thanks to his cleave attack, and then turning around to face your tank. Add more Unbound minis or spells around Tirion as needed.

Tirion’s opening hand will be different depending on your random seed, and the seed only changes when you win. This means that you will be able to learn what Tirion can and will do in response to your actions. You either want to go in as soon as possible, or you want to wait Tirion to deploy something, and then start the attack. Tirion starts at 0 gold, so after he deploys the first mini, he is most likely all out of gold.

S.A.F.E. Pilot and Pyromancer are the main threats to your push, but learning Tirion’s opener will allow you to navigate around them. Your last resort is Cheat Death, which can keep your minis alive just long enough.
