Assassin's Creed Shadows Kofun Raider: Trophy Guide

Written by Joanna - 3rd April 2025

The Kofun Raider Trophy is one of the easier Bronze Trophies to achieve in Assassin’s Creed Shadows, and it can be unlocked during the early stages of the game.

Kofuns are large burial mounds with distinctive archaeological features, constructed during the Kofun period in Japan. These burial sites, which often contain elaborate chambers and tunnels, were the final resting places of influential figures. Much like the pyramids of Egypt, Kofuns are known to hold valuables that were buried with the deceased. The most recognisable feature of the Kofuns is their keyhole shape, which many of them form.

In Assassin’s Creed Shadows, you are given the chance to explore and loot these Kofun tombs, encountering parkour and puzzle challenges as you delve into the underground systems.

Kofun Raider Trophy Guide

It’s highly likely that the first Kofun you’ll encounter in AC Shadows will be the Old Kofun. This Kofun is accessible, explorable, and can be completed during Naoe’s opening sequence, making it an easy way to unlock the Kofun Raider Trophy early on in the game.

Given that the Kofun Raider Trophy is likely to be your first experience with these tombs, you might not know what to expect. Below, we’ll provide a step-by-step guide on how to find and complete the Old Kofun, unlocking the Kofun Raider Trophy upon completion.

Top Tip: You can unlock up to three trophies in this one Kofun location (Kofun Raider, Acrobatics and Hook, Line and Swinger). Keep reading to find out how!

Where to Find the Old Kofun

The Old Kofun is located in the Izumi Settsu region, just North of Izumi Coast and East of Sakai. It’s easily identifiable on the map by its keyhole-shaped appearance, if you’ve cleared the Fog of War in the area.

When you arrive at the Old Kofun, you’ll see the question mark symbol is situated between two rocks. Simply walk towards this gap and you’ll enter the Old Kofun.

How to Navigate the Old Kofun

Before you begin exploring the Old Kofun, we highly recommend lighting any candles you come across. This will help you keep track of which tunnels you’ve already explored, ensuring you won’t get lost within the tunnels and chambers.

Follow the step-by-step route below to reach the chest at the end of the Old Kofun and unlock the Kofun Raider Trophy.

STEP 1. Enter the Old Kofun:

Immediately after entering the Old Kofun, you’ll drop down into a tunnel. Follow this tunnel until you reach the first small chamber. Here, you’ll find a small chest to collect.

STEP 2. Crawl Through a Narrow Opening:

Next, go prone and crawl through the narrow opening next to the chest (hold square on PS5, X on Xbox or C on PC). Continue crawling until you can return to standing.

STEP 3. Enter the Next Small Chamber:

Follow the tunnel and enter the next small chamber. There’s nothing to collect here, so immediately head through the tunnel on your left and proceed to the next large chamber.

STEP 4. Cross the Water Pit Using the Grappling Hook:

In this large chamber, you’ll find a pit of water separating the two ends. Use your grappling hook (L1 on PS5, LB on Xbox or Q on PC) and swing across to the other side, pressing jump when towards the end of the swing.

STEP 5. Find Another Chest:

On the other side of the chamber, follow the tunnel forward and then turn left to find another chest. Once you’ve collected this, turn back on yourself and you’ll spot a gap between two walls (similar to the Kofun entrance). Walk towards the gap and you’ll clamber through it.

STEP 6. Dive Underwater and Swim to the Next Tunnel:

After clambering through the gap, you’ll find yourself in a chamber with water. Walk towards the end of the room, dive under the water and look to your left. Swim towards the opening between the two walls and swim upwards, where you’ll break the surface and enter a new tunnel.

STEP 7. Grapple Hook Across Another Water Pit:

Follow the tunnel and you’ll soon enter another chamber with water separating the two sides. This chamber requires you to use the grappling hook, to swing to the other side, but first:

  • There’s a chest that you can collect by diving in the water pit, but it’s a little tricky to see where you can get out of the water. You have to climb the side you’ve dived into the water from, go to the left-hand corner of this side and there’s a ledge that you can climb up.
  • There’s another chest in an elevated side tunnel. To access it, use the grappling hook to climb up. Once you’re above the level of the side tunnel, swing and jump to reach the chest.

Top Tip: This chamber is a great place to unlock the Acrobatics trophy. Read our Acrobatics Trophy Guide to find out how (available soon)!

STEP 8. Continue Through the Next Tunnel:

  • If you’ve chosen to simply grapple across the chamber on the lower level, then go down the stairs.
  • If you’ve gone for the chest in the elevated side tunnel, grapple and swing to the tunnel opposite. Follow this tunnel, it will lead you to the bottom of the stairs mentioned above.

Next, follow the tunnel leading on from the bottom of the stairs till you reach another chamber.

STEP 9. Go Prone Again:

Go prone and crawl through the space to the left-hand side of the chamber. You’ll emerge in a tunnel with stalagmites and stalactites. Follow this tunnel to enter another larger chamber with various pots (some shaped as horses).

STEP 10. Climb the Stairs:

Head to the right of the chamber and you’ll see a tunnel with steps leading upwards. Follow this tunnel and you’ll approach a window-like hole in the stone ahead. Beyond this lies a much larger chamber with water separating the two ends.

Note: Ignore the path on the right as this is the way you’ll come back up, should you fall into the water in the chamber.

STEP 11. Use the Grappling Hook for a Double Swing:

Enter the chamber and you’ll be prompted to use your grappling hook. Use the grappling hook but make sure to swing a couple of times, before attempting your jump, to ensure you’re reaching maximum distance with the hook. When ready, press Jump at the end of the swing and quickly press to grapple again, as soon as you see the prompt.

Note: Completing this action will unlock the Hook, Line and Swinger trophy.

Top Tip: If you fall into the water, look for a tunnel at water-level. Follow it to return to the chamber entrance and attempt the grapple again.

STEP 12. Open the Kofun Chest:

You’ll now see the chest in front of you, go ahead and open it, to collect your rewards.

How to Exit the Old Kofun

STEP 1. Climb Out and Reach the Bamboo Platform:

Head through the hole in the wall to the left of the chest and follow the tunnel. You’ll need to climb out of this section, so start climbing the wall straight ahead and you’ll reach a bamboo platform further up.

STEP 2. Enter the Tunnel and Slide Down:

From the platform, enter the tunnel straight ahead, go left, and climb some steps. Hop over the wall at the top of the steps and you’ll slide down into a chamber.

STEP 3. Unblock the Stairs:

In this chamber, there’ll be a box to replenish your equipment, use it if you need more Kunai. Face to the right of this box and you’ll see some blocked stairs with two explosive pots nearby. Throw a Kunai at one of the pots to cause an explosion, which will unblock the stairs.

STEP 4. Climb the Stairs and Return to the Previous Chamber:

Climb the stairs and hop over the small wall at the top. You’ll be back in the chamber from Step 2 of Navigating the Old Kofun.

STEP 5. Exit the Old Kofun:

Go straight to the tunnel opposite. Follow this until you have a small climb up a rock. You’ll then be back at the Kofun entrance. Walk towards it, and you’ll exit the Kofun.

Kofun Raider Trophy Tips

Pro tip: There are no enemies in the Old Kofun, so you can take your time exploring without worrying about stealth or combat. This makes it an ideal location for trophy hunting, with the main challenge being executing the grapples rather than avoiding foes.

Lighting the candles as you go through the Kofun is highly recommended. It makes navigation a lot easier by helping you keep track of where you’ve already been, ensuring you don’t get lost while looking for the Kofun chest.

Now that you’ve got the intel, enjoy exploring the Old Kofun! For more guidance on unlocking trophies and other tips in Assassin's Creed Shadows, check out Method's AC Shadows guides for in-depth information and helpful strategies!
