The War Within released many powerful trinkets, one of the more curious ones being the Shadowed Essence, with a cryptic Equip effect: “Entering combat summons an orb of dark power to assist you”.
On Beta this trinket has been overpowered for how easy it is to obtain, and as it wasn’t testable on the max level Beta server, it’s hard to judge where it will rank.
In case it becomes a trinket of interest (at least in the first few weeks), this guide will show you how to get it and what it actually does.
How to obtain the Shadowed Essence Trinket
The Shadowed Essence is looted from a treasure event in the southern part of Hallowfall, in a cave in the Stagnant Mire zone. In this cave you will notice a group of dead ritualists, near a ring of candles with an interactable object in the center. Interacting with this object will begin the event. A portal will open and waves of enemies will spawn and attack you. Kill these enemies to get The Creeping Shadow to spawn. He is pretty simple to kill, just make sure you interrupt Inflict Death as this deals heavy damage over time. The Creeping Shadow will drop the Shadowed essence on ? explorer track.

How the Shadow Essence Trinket Works
The Shadow Essence has three effects.
The first is a buff granting almost 1400 main stat at Item level 571, which has around a 70% uptime.
The second effect is a buff granting around 700 critical strike rating with about 50% uptime.
The final effect is the possibility to proc a large shadow damage hit. It has no internal cooldown and this damage ends up to be around 10-12k DPS over a 5 minute fight. A curious thing to note is the damage does not seem to be affected by the 33% nerf for tanks and healers, possibly making it a strong choice for them.
