The War Within: Ore Prospecting Guide

The War Within: Ore Prospecting Guide

Written by Roguery - 12th August 2024

This guide will help you to understand which Ore you need to Prospect to get each Gem in The War Within.

Just like in all previous expansions, Jewelcrafters in The War Within must Prospect ore to find raw gemstones, and just like in Dragonflight there is a possibility to specialize into Prospecting to receive more or better quality materials. However, this time around we will also be able to specialize into specific gemstones to make them drop more frequently.

Jewelcrafting prospecting outcomes

The War Within has five gemstones:

Prospecting ore will most often drop Glittering Glass and Handful of Pebbles which can be further prospected. Occasionally, Prospecting will drop one of the gemstones in the list above. Without specializing into better prospecting through Shaping and Gem Finding the amount of gems you get are really low, and you will mostly find Ambivalent Ambers. However, there is still a chance to find the rare quality gems, and which ore you are prospecting will determine which gem it will be.

The table below shows the baseline of what each ore can drop, without any knowledge points placed; in The War Within, it is possible to use knowledge points to extend the possible drops from prospecting a particular ore.

Ore Gems
Bismuth Ambivalent Amber
Aqirite Ambivalent Amber, Stunning Sapphire, Extravagant Emerald
Ironclaw Ore Ambivalent Amber, Radiant Ruby, Ostentatious Onyx
Null Stone Ambivalent Amber, Radiant Ruby, Ostentatious Onyx, Stunning Sapphire, Extravagant Emerald

This means that if you want for example Extravagant Emerald, you must prospect Aqirite or Null Stone as these are the only two options that give Extravagant Emeralds (without allocating knowledge points).

Specializing into Prospecting and Gem Finding

By putting Knowledge Points into the Shaping Specialization, and then into the Gem Finding sub-specialization, you will be able to further specialize into the specific gem types: Sapphire, Emerald, Ruby and Onyx.

Gemshaping sub-specialization

By selecting one of these specific gem type specializations, the uncommon ore that doesn’t usually drop that gem will start to occasionally drop that gem type.

For example, selecting the Emerald specialization will cause Ironclaw Ore to occasionally drop Extravagant Emeralds. At the same time, Bismuth ore will start having a chance to drop Extravagant Emeralds instead of an Ambivalent Amber.

Speccing into all four gem types will make all ores drop all five gems.

Quality of Ore

The quality of the ore you prospect affects the frequency with which you find gems, higher quality ore gives more gems. Null Stone do not have a quality, but very often result in at least one or more gems.
