Gunpowder is an essential component in Windrose as, alongside Bullets, it is required for you to fire any ranged weapon such as a pistol, musket or blunderbuss.
Somewhat oddly, you can't actually craft your own gunpowder until around the middle of the current early access version of the game, so until then you will need to make do with any that you can loot!
How to Get Gunpowder in Windrose: Crafting Gunpowder
Important Note: You won't be able to craft gunpowder until you reach the Foothills and harvest Corn!
To craft Gunpowder, you must unlock the Millstones workstation. This can be done by obtaining Corn from an island in the Foothills which will unlock the crafting of Millstones Parts for 15 Stone at the Workbench. We have a guide that shows you exactly where to find corn in the Foothills, if you aren't sure.
Once you've crafted your Millstone Parts at your Workbench, here is the recipe for crafting Millstones in Build Mode:
- Millstones: 1 Millstone Parts + 15 Wood
Once you have a Millstones up and running, you can use it to craft Gunpowder. You need Ash and Sulfur to create Gunpowder. The former can be obtained as a byproduct of making Charcoal in the Charcoal Kiln, while Sulfur can be collected from nodes that spawn on rocky outcroppings in the Foothills. Here is the recipe for Gunpowder:
- Gunpowder: 10 Ash + 20 Sulfur
You can get a steady supply of Sulfur from the Natural Resources Merchant once you have defeated Hands in the Foothills. Ash you will come by easily from the charcoal you are creating for smelting but you can also create 6x Ash at the Millstones for 2x Charcoal if needed.
Crafting Gunpowder With Mortar Joe
In Windrose you can enlist the help of Workers and assign them to your crafting buildings to receive passive benefits. The Millstones is one of four buildings that you can assign a worker to and when you do, you'll receive a +50% increase to Gunpowder production. How to Get Gunpowder in Windrose: Looting Gunpowder
You can also loot Gunpowder from chests and from the bodies of defeated pirate enemies:
- POI Chests: The chests you find in various POIs such as Ruins can drop Gunpowder.
- Killing Enemy Pirates: Sailors and higher level human enemies like Musketeers often drop Gunpowder when killed.
When you reach the Foothills, you'll find that clearing out camps of pirates can leave you with almost a full stack of Gunpowder, so it's not to be sniffed at until you can start crafting your own.
How To Use Gunpowder
It’s important to remember that you need both Bullets and Gunpowder to use guns. When you acquire Gunpowder, it is automatically equipped in your inventory in the Ammo slot beside the bullets. You can also turn on auto-refill to make reloading the weapon during combat much easier.
